NASHVILLE — The Tennessee House advanced a plan Tuesday that would let local governments impose a sales tax, as well as a state income tax, in addition to the state’s 6 percent sales tax.
House Bill 889 passed on a narrow, 70-56 vote, with five Republicans joining with all the House Democrats to reject the bill. It now heads to the Senate.
The bill would allow counties and cities to impose a “local option sales and use tax.” The proceeds would be deposited into a county or local government’s general fund, to be used at the discretion of the governing body. The state sales tax would continue to apply on all other items, including items sold directly by the government, such as public health and safety, and those sold through the government’s purchases.
