Xeros/WISE 2018: Updates from an industry run by hackers

There are two types of people in the world: those that run and those that are run. Often we are the ones running. We run our companies, run our projects and generally put in a lot of hard work to make sure our lives are as busy as possible. But that doesn’t mean we are immune from attacks.

Security is a never-ending battle. But at least we can count on one thing when it comes to keeping our systems safe:

It’s a run thing.

This was the central message of the Xeros/WISE 2018 conference, held in London. It was organised by network security specialists Arbor Networks and technology research company Arbor Research Labs. Xeros is a boot and ISO (live image) CD system that can be run without the need for a hard drive. While this means you don’t have a backup of your operating system in the event of a catastrophic failure, it means you can run your systems without interfering with the on-going operation of your day to day business.

The ISO system used for Xeros is called WISE (for “Wi-Fi Secure Image System”) and it is based on the open source Linux operating system. WISE includes an application, which is a friendly way of talking to the WISE device (Xeros itself) and the root file system on the device.

The conference was the largest gathering of security professionals in the industry, with more than 700 attendees. Speakers covered a wide range of topics from using security tools to mitigate against wireless attacks to establishing common good security practices.
