The initial commercial release of AutoCAD was solely for personal use only. A software license was required to be purchased separately. The first AutoCAD release was a home-use version. It was introduced in June 1984 for $995 with a four-user license. A commercial version (version 2) was released in 1987. Both versions have a 12.9 MB application file and can be run on top of Windows 3.11 and DOS. Later on, a 16-bit version was released on DOS, and a 32-bit version for Windows was released in 1989. A CD-ROM version was also released in 1987.

By 2001, Autodesk was one of the top 20 software companies in the world. In 2002, Autodesk was acquired by software services company EDS. In March 2004, Autodesk was acquired by private equity firm, Blackstone Group for $5.26 billion. The company was later sold to private equity firm, TPG Capital for $1.26 billion on August 24, 2005. In November 2006, TPG sold a 75% stake of AutoCAD to Groupe Bruxelles Capital (GB Capital), a subsidiary of Swiss-based Groupe Bruxelles. Groupe Bruxelles and Swiss-based Syngenta AG then completed the purchase of the remaining 25% stake in AutoCAD from Groupe Bruxelles in August 2007 for $560 million. Groupe Bruxelles completed its purchase of the entire company in November 2007 for $1.95 billion. Autodesk maintains that it is a privately owned company.

AutoCAD is a common term for both AutoCAD 2000 (for Windows) and AutoCAD LT (for Windows), which are two applications of AutoCAD. For further information on the individual applications, see AutoCAD.

Autodesk, Inc. released AutoCAD 2016 in September 2015 as AutoCAD Version 2016 and AutoCAD LT 2016. The upgrades added a wide array of new features, functions, and enhancements. Some of the notable new features include:

Completely redesigned Workspaces, which allow users to perform different functions on the same drawing and bring tools into and out of view as needed. The three workspaces are: Drafting, Review and Presentation, and Drawing Production.

A revised Content Browser and Application Menu. The Content Browser allows users to search and filter by layer, objects, editing mode
