Unit testing a method that modifies a global variable

I have a small class, that has a method that is called during a database search and then stores a result in a global variable. When I want to test this method, I would need to mock the global variable because the database search usually returns different data, making the test invalid if the test fails during the execution of the method.
My question is, what would be a good approach to handle the situation? Let’s say I’d like to have a default value for the global variable, but still test the update of the global variable. What would be a good way to do so?
Should I use the TestCase class and set the default value, then in the method I check for the default value to be set and update the global variable, thus running some additional test(s) for the update?
