Wagtail prevent child page from deleting, restore old order

Is there a way to prevent my child pages (and all other pages, for that matter) from being deleted? I’m trying to restore the old order, but it always does a post-delete order on child pages to move them back to the end of the parent (assuming they are at the end of the parent).
(The order of these are decided by a custom Django model, and while I’m happy to make it queryable, I can’t seem to find a good way to do that.)

Well, there’s nothing Wagtail-specific about this; it’s a generic Django problem that will apply to any Django-based site. The issue is that, by default, every model is assigned an ordering attribute in the form of models.CASCADE. If you simply omit the CASCADE setting for your child model, it will not inherit the ordering attribute from its parent.
If you don’t want to do that (which I assume is a requirement given that you’re asking), there is a migration-based solution:

However, I wouldn’t recommend doing it that way – it relies on the child model being removed when the parent is deleted, which is what you’re trying to avoid. If you want a generic solution that works regardless of how the ordering was assigned, you should add an ordering attribute to your child model, and then define a PostDeleteHook in your child model to set the ordering of all child objects to a fixed order as the parent’s order is changed.
