Cannot add user with SSL cert

I am having trouble authenticating users in my Drupal 7 install. It works with HTTPs, but not with SSL. I have the Apache Virtual Host configuration set up to use SSL, and I am using an Nginx reverse proxy to point to the Apache Virtual Host. The Nginx reverse proxy also handles all the HTTP headers and redirects to the appropriate Virtual Host when needed. The only thing that appears to be different between an HTTP request and an HTTPS request is that the mod_ssl headers are sent in an HTTP request, but I’m not sure that’s relevant or not.
I’m not sure what the relevant information is here, so if anyone can point me in the right direction, I’d appreciate it! Thanks!
