History
Autodesk filed for a patent on a programmable CAD system in 1974, and it took the company ten years to develop it into a commercially viable product. It was released for use in 1982.
AutoCAD was originally intended to be a CAD application for the Apple II computer. Since Apple II users were in much smaller companies than those using mainframe computers or minicomputers, Apple II owners were much more willing to buy AutoCAD than were users of those other platforms.
AutoCAD was originally designed to run on a 68000-based Macintosh IIc and IIci-based Macintosh. Later, a DOS version of AutoCAD was available for the IBM PC, and there were versions for both the Atari ST and Amiga, and several versions for the Apple Macintosh.
AutoCAD Classic (since 1996) is a proprietary implementation of the classic 1987 AutoCAD v.1.1. AutoCAD LT (since 1998) is a (license-free) implementation of the classic 1987 AutoCAD v.1.1 for use with Windows. AutoCAD LT has been available for Windows, OS/2, and Linux since 1998.
AutoCAD LT 2.0 (since 2005) is the first version of AutoCAD LT to support the Windows Vista graphical user interface (GUI). It is written in the.NET Framework. AutoCAD LT 3.0 (since 2009) is an update to AutoCAD LT 2.0 for Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows 2000.
AutoCAD Architecture (since 2011) is a freeware version of AutoCAD LT (since 1998) for use with Linux and other Unix operating systems, and Mac OS X. AutoCAD Architecture uses the.NET Framework instead of the deprecated Windows GDI+ API.
In 2016, Autodesk released its first mobile-focused product, AutoCAD 360. AutoCAD 360 is a 3D modeling solution for both iOS and Android devices.
Functionality and features
AutoCAD can be used to create a variety of geometrical and engineering objects. The tools needed to make drawings vary according to the specific type of the drawings to be produced. Depending on the type of the drawings, the tools available in the user interface vary. The most common types of drawings include architectural plans, sections, elevations, and three-dimensional models.
AutoCAD can be used to create

AutoCAD provides basic libraries for drawing and processing features. For drawing objects, AutoCAD provides an ADDLIB and AFT.ADDLIB. For 3D drawing, an ABDLIB and AFT.ABDLIB. For feature points, an AFTLIB and AFT.AFTLIB.
The AFTLIB is the AutoCAD native library, which is a flat-file database similar to a relational database but an autodata format. The AFTLIB’s data model is based on the Relational Data Model. The ADDLIB is a 3D data file that stores one or more objects in a flat-file format. The ADDLIB contains geometric and attribute data related to the selected objects. The data model of the ADDLIB is based on the Unordered Attribute Data Model.
