AutoCAD is a professional 2D and 3D drafting, design, and visualization tool, used for planning, designing and documentation of construction projects, and by information technology professionals. History
The original AutoCAD had no mouse support, as it ran on a microcomputer with a graphics interface, and the standard method of using a mouse was not developed until much later. The mouse was used in AutoCAD to “grab” an area of the screen, then it was moved around using the mouse’s buttons. The mouse was a much more natural way to use CAD than the command line.
On June 4, 1984, AutoCAD 1.0 was released, and on July 9, 1984, Autodesk released the source code of AutoCAD. In 1985, Autodesk released AutoCAD LT (later renamed AutoCAD Classic) for the Apple Macintosh, a cheaper and less-powerful version of AutoCAD. On February 16, 1987, Autodesk’s first annual user conference (Autodesk University) was held in Las Vegas. In April 1987, AutoCAD was released for Amiga and Atari computers, and by July 1987, AutoCAD Lite was released for the Commodore Amiga. AutoCAD for the IBM PC was released in 1988. In April 1989, AutoCAD 2.0 was released, which had mouse support and reduced memory requirements. AutoCAD’s first educational version, AutoCAD LT, was released in 1990, and AutoCAD Classic was renamed AutoCAD in 1990. In 1994, AutoCAD was released for Windows 3.0 (Win95). In 1995, Autodesk introduced AutoCAD R14, a version of AutoCAD that incorporated some of the design functionality found in AutoCAD LT.
AutoCAD’s first Macintosh version, AutoCAD 1998, was released in March 1998. In 1999, Autodesk released AutoCAD R17 for Windows 3.1 (Win98) users. In 2000, the first Mac OS X version was released.

AutoCAD 3D. Introduced in 1993.
AutoCAD 2000, circa 2000. This was the last version to be released for DOS. The program is still distributed for DOS, but was now available for Windows as well.
AutoCAD 2002, circa 2001. This was the first version to be able to handle huge numbers of objects. It also had many improvements, such as a greater number of tools for navigating objects, a new rendering engine, support for BMP, and a new cross-reference system.
AutoCAD 2006, circa 2001. This version was bundled with Dimension, and could import and export to the STL format.
AutoCAD 2010, circa 2006. This version featured a major redesign, a new ribbon-based interface, new tools, and many bug fixes.
AutoCAD 2011, circa 2008. This version featured many bug fixes and minor improvements. The biggest change was the addition of the new “3D” button in the ribbon toolbar, which brought the design interface into a 3D modeler, similar to that found in Revit. A major new feature was the ability to use a grid for positioning and dimensioning objects.
