History
Origins
AutoCAD was created by George Van Horn (president of Van Horn Software, a company based in Woburn, Massachusetts) and co-authors Bill Van Horn, Dan Forney and Gary Griffiths (developed the version 1.0 software) in the mid-1970s while George was still an aerospace design engineer at P&S Computer Inc., an early computer graphics company. They were working on a research project for a computer-aided design system called ConceptSketch, and wanted to use the graphics part to “embed” the geometry, and the programming to control the graphics. They also wanted to make it available on personal computers (like the Apple II) instead of mainframes. The design needed to be flexible enough to allow the user to add or remove capabilities, and it needed to be easy for other engineers to use.
The first version of AutoCAD was a desktop software application, requiring a graphics terminal and a personal computer with an internal graphics controller. The graphics terminal also had to have a separate monitor and keyboard and a basic operating system such as CP/M, DOS or Microsoft Windows. During the 1980s, most personal computers lacked an internal graphics controller. As a result, users who wanted to use AutoCAD had to buy the graphics terminal separately, either from their computer manufacturer or a third-party supplier. In some cases, this would cost several hundred dollars.
Another option was for a user to buy a graphics adapter card for a computer that already had a graphics controller, such as an IBM PC compatible with a Hercules graphics card. These cards, while powerful and inexpensive, were not compatible with all versions of AutoCAD and did not run on all operating systems. In 1984, a graphics controller (the HP8520 Graphics Controller) that was compatible with AutoCAD was added to the Apple Macintosh computer, giving Mac users an alternative solution for getting AutoCAD.
Release
AutoCAD was originally priced at $495. In 1987, the price was reduced to $295. The price dropped again in 1994 to $190. After the release of AutoCAD 2000, the price was raised to $495, and in 2001 to $1,000.
Autodesk acquired Van Horn Software in 1991, and it was merged with design automation software provider Allegro Corporation the same year. The Allegro name was dropped from AutoCAD in 1999. In 2003, Aut

Automatic dimensional data
The drawings in AutoCAD can be set to automatically save dimensions in the dimensioning table. Every object in the drawing file has a dimension stored in the drawing file. These dimensions are automatically saved when a drawing is closed. Dimensions are saved in the following format:

AutoCAD’s Dimension Manager feature lets you edit the dimensions from a web browser. This allows for edits of dimensions on a web-enabled drawing. This feature can be found in the Preferences Dialog in AutoCAD Classic and under the Preferences option in AutoCAD LT.
Workbench
The workbench is the main interface to AutoCAD and consists of four major panes. These include the status bar, command line, drawing area and the drawing grid. The status bar is used for displaying the current status of the drawing, such as current zoom level, and allows for the displaying of objects, layers, and materials. The command line is used for entering commands into the system, creating and modifying layers, and displaying messages and output. The drawing area is where the drawing is displayed. The drawing grid is used for panning and zooming, and is also where the dimensioning table is displayed. The drawing area is the active area of the drawing, or the area where the commands are being executed. The drawing area is displayed behind the canvas on which the drawing is stored. This is important to note because it means the drawing area is not visible when a command is entered.
As AutoCAD opens a drawing, the main menu is displayed at the top of the workbench. From here, users can select from the various options within the program, such as Create drawing or Load drawings.
Keyboard shortcuts
AutoCAD provides a number of keyboard shortcuts, which can be modified from the Preferences dialog. These keyboard shortcuts allow for faster user input and manipulation of the drawing and information. The ability to modify the keyboard shortcuts are in the Preferences dialog, under the Keyboard Shortcuts tab.

Use the new Smart Snap feature to align two or more shapes. Adjust the snap location and type, and quickly align shapes by using the new Align To Selection tool or by dragging a selection to align with other geometry.
Use the new Shape Builder tool to quickly create new drawing objects, such as pipes, ladders, and chairs.
Draw parametric curves and splines with the new Spline tool. Use the new Lasso to draw freehand, and then use the Spline tool to create a parametric spline or a Bezier spline.
