Mixing MVC 3/4 ViewModels and Entity Framework and why?

I am trying to get my head around how I can apply logic in the view from a model object. I am using.NET 4.0 and MVC 3.0
The viewmodel would contain the logic for all of the operations in the view, and if possible, use the models from the database in order to do the work, otherwise it would handle the logic for itself and be completely view-independent.
For example, the viewmodel might have a property “IsChecked”, and in the view I might have a checkbox like this:

With this logic I could basically do whatever I want in my viewmodel, and the HtmlHelper is completely optional.
The other side of the coin is that the viewmodel can actually have properties that are just properties from the underlying database. For example,

Then the view just “knows” this is a database Id, so it just uses the id to do things like select/update, etc. Again, the viewmodel would be completely view-independent.
The actual question is, when/why/how should I be doing these different things. Should the viewmodel have the logic for the view, or should the viewmodel only have properties that are directly from the database.

The main advantage of using a view model is that you can use your view model to display multiple views in your application. View models are a layer between the presentation and the data. That’s the main point of them. So in your case it seems that you want to reuse your view model and view for multiple views.
