What could be the reason for my car to be equipped with GSM modem instead of cell modem?

I have a car manufactured in 2007 and I am thinking about the possibility of buying a new one with better equipment in the next years.
Recently I noticed that all my new cars equipped with cell modems, but my old car has a GSM modem.
I remember that there was a decision to have cell modems exclusively, but now it seems that the same modems are used in both types of cars (i.e. although they have the same name, it seems that in all the cars they use some proprietary ICs, and the interface between IC and modem is the same).

The international standard uses the term “GSM” because the common short name of “mobile”, “cell”, and “telephony” were already taken. The frequencies are actually shared with “CDMA” (“Code Division Multiple Access”) which is the underlying technology of a few different technologies including “CDMA2000” (but not “3GPP”) and “GSM Evolution”.
The basic differences between the two is that GSM uses TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) for its slots instead of CDMA’s FDD (Frequency Division Duplexing) for half-duplex talk-and-listen.
