AutoCAD Architecture

AutoCAD is available as a commercial desktop application for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux-based computers, and as a web app on the Internet. In the Windows version of AutoCAD, there are two applications: AutoCAD, the CAD application, and AutoCAD LT, a non-CAD or drafting application. The original name of AutoCAD was APOLLO, which stood for Automatic PLacing of Lines On Curves and Oblique (Lines), referring to the placement of parallel and oblique lines on curves. AutoCAD LT’s name was changed to AutoCAD LT in 2012.

The two-level software architecture of AutoCAD is based on (1) the AutoCAD application, which consists of two primary modules, the drawing editor and the drawing manager, and (2) AutoCAD LT, which is a front-end user interface for creating technical drawings (not sales/marketing or marketing materials).
