Introduction

AutoCAD Fundamentals
Before you start drawing, you need to decide which type of drawing you want to do. Many AutoCAD functions are only available in certain types of drawings, and the different types of drawings are discussed in the next section.
AutoCAD is primarily a two-dimensional (2D) drafting application, although some functions are also available in three-dimensional (3D) applications.
The drawing canvas of AutoCAD is on a two-dimensional (2D) plane, which is similar to the paper on which you write. Just as on paper, you can use one or more axes, such as X and Y, to describe the position of objects in your drawing. You can also use lines to describe the shape of objects.
In addition to the XY plane, AutoCAD also uses an XZ plane and a YZ plane, which are both defined perpendicular to the XY plane. These additional planes are useful if you need to make your drawings mirror the paper or if you need to view the drawing from a new perspective.
You use the cursor to identify the objects you want to draw, and you use tools (such as dimension and snap tools) to modify or manipulate those objects.
For example, to draw a line segment from the current point to a point 50 units away, you select the point you want to use as the origin of the line, use the Line tool, and position your cursor. Then you use the left or right arrow keys to move the cursor along the X and Y axes, and press the spacebar to specify 50 units as the length of the line.

History
The first version of AutoCAD was developed by Softimage from 1988 to 1990. The first release of AutoCAD was available by June 1990, with a version number of 2.1. AutoCAD was originally designed as a desktop CAD package for the Apple Macintosh. The first Windows version of AutoCAD was available in January 1991 for $2,495. During the 1990s the software was extended to cover drafting on vector platforms. In 1997, the company AutoDesk introduced AutoCAD 2000, an all-in-one office solution for business users.
In 1998, the software was ported to Windows NT, making AutoCAD the first Windows-based 3D CAD software. The same year saw the release of AutoCAD
