Mutable array in Objective-C++
I am reading Apple’s doc on Objective-C++ here:
It says to use NSMutableArray if you are using arrays that need to be modified.
My question is: How can you declare NSMutableArray in a.mm file?
If I try to do something like:
NSMutableArray*> *orderedStrings;
I get an error saying “NSMutableArray is not a member of NSMutableArray”.

My question is: How can you declare NSMutableArray in a.mm file?
The NSMutableArray is a class and you can only create objects of classes. You can’t create an instance of an object of type NSMutableArray. All classes have a class pointer that you must send alloc messages to.
When the alloc message is executed, it will return a pointer to a new object. So you can send alloc to an NSMutableArray, and you will get a new NSMutableArray.
You can also send init messages to create instances of an object. The object will be returned, and you can then add your own values to that array.
If you want to keep a “template” array of mutable arrays, you can use an NSArray and add your mutable arrays to it. Then you can keep a reference to the NSArray in your header file.
