AutoCAD’s uses
AutoCAD is used for designing
AutoCAD is used for designing various kinds of mechanical, electrical, civil and architectural engineering drawings. The software is used for the design of building construction and in other fields where 2D drawings are used to communicate the design. The drawings can be printed and rendered for 3D visualization. AutoCAD includes features such as:
Drafting and design
The basic function of AutoCAD is to allow users to create, modify and view 2D drawings for the purposes of 3D visualization, documentation and print. It is available in various platforms: desktop computers, tablets and smartphones.
Layers
A Layer is a technique used to organize CAD drawings. By using layers, you can combine blocks and text objects into groups or make parts of the drawing transparent or invisible.
2D and 3D drawings
AutoCAD is designed to allow the creation of 2D and 3D drawings. AutoCAD includes special commands for the creation of architectural drawings such as:
Columns and beams
Curves and splines
Text
A selection of drawing and drawing commands
For creating 2D drawings, a selection of drawing commands including:
Draw
Select and stretch
Move and rotate
Clip
Extend
Colour
Define centre
Draw guides
Rotate, scale, mirror
Create and modify 2D drawings
Draw, align, snap, text, include and path options are available for creating 2D drawings. You can also edit existing 2D drawings, include objects, and create 3D visualization.
Drawing simplification
Drawing simplification is a feature that organizes complex drawing into simpler forms that contain fewer features. You can also:
Create new views
Hide objects
Redraw simplification rules
Drawing simplification is used to decrease the number of individual objects and symbols in a drawing.
The creation of 3D drawings
Drawing and model commands that are used for the creation of 3D models in AutoCAD include:
Scenes
Surfaces
Faces
Orientation and base
Surface modelling commands allow you to change the orientation and base of your 3D model. You can also control various things such as:
Tolerance
Collision
Selection
from 2000 (with component was discontinued in 2014) AutoCAD Movie was a command-line utility designed to export drawings, models or sections from AutoCAD and associated files to QuickTime movie format. It was discontinued in 2007.
Some products, like the Cobalt Ideate, and AutoCAD.NET are designed to work with AutoCAD natively.
AutoCAD LT allows third party developers to extend AutoCAD LT natively and to work in a similar way as for AutoCAD.
AutoCAD-type functionality can also be accessed through a number of add-ons, such as Fusion 360 (additive manufacturing).
Extensions
Several extension libraries are available for AutoCAD. These are described in the API documentation:
VideoLISP provides procedural macros, which allow script-like programming.
VSX.NET provides Visual Studio functionality.
VisLib is a component that can be used for both VB and C++ developers to write a Visual Basic or C++ component to Autodesk’s application programming interface, which supports drawing and modeling in AutoCAD.
Serial port connectivity
In 2005, Autodesk began offering serial port connectivity as a standard feature on a number of their products, including AutoCAD. This allows the user to connect a USB or RS-232 serial adapter to the computer and receive data directly from the drawing software. This mechanism provides a simple way of gathering data about the drawing from devices other than a computer, such as barcode scanners or distance sensors. This data can then be used for specialized purposes, such as printed barcode labels for sign-in forms or the printing of QR codes directly from a drawing.
Other computer connectivity
NuTech and VDL have used natural language based (often referred to as natural language processing (NLP)) programming in other applications.
In 2008, Autodesk introduced free online drawing cloud services.
Some older systems, including Autodesk’s AutoLISP 3D toolkit and B-Rep and DWS software, used a B-rep format, which is an XML based, hierarchical, geometric data format, used for the exchange of 3D model data between the various applications.
Recognition and interaction
AutoCAD enables recognition of symbols, which are drawn on screen, and convert the recognized symbols to an internal form. The internal representation is then used by the drawing engine

To setup the Autocad key, go to the Autocad App in the menu and select
Preferences.
Select Keyboard and then look for the Settings button.
Select General then look for the key on the right
To activate the “AutoCAD” key, click the “Use Windows Key” option.
After setting the key, you can create shortcuts to your desired programs
In Autodesk Autocad, go to the menu
Select Preferences then look for the Key option.
Look for the General box to see the list of shortcuts.
Look for the Autocad box to see the shortcut for Autocad in the sub-menu.
Launch AutoCAD, you should have AutoCAD open and a program shortcut on the
autocad menu.
You can also set shortcuts for any other programs like 3D-Coordinate, Creo,
Revit, Navisworks, and others.
You can also set a shortcut for Autocad without using the key.
For that, install AutoCAD and go to the menu and select
Preferences.
Select Keyboard and then look for the Settings button.
Select General then look for the key on the right.
You can also use the shortcut with the following name: .
For example, the autocad shortcut should be “Acad.exe”.
or you can use the shortcut with the following name: “Acad.exe “.
For example, the shortcut for Autocad with “Architectural Design”, should be
“Acad.exe Architectural Design”.
For the Autocad with “Multimedia”, the shortcut should be “Acad.exe Multimedia”.
For any other program, the shortcut should be “Acad.exe “.
For example, the shortcut for Autocad with “Data Management” should be
“Acad.exe Data Management”.
Markup Import gives you more control over what you import and what you accept. You can save your markups as graphics, text, or blocks, or as shapes. You can also edit these customizations to keep them consistent with your other drawings.
When you import feedback, you can accept it all (override any existing markups), create new ones, or edit existing ones, based on existing markings or CAD data.
Markups assist you in many ways. For example, they can save you time by automatically suggesting corrections or by removing unused blocks. (video: 1:35 min.)
Edit and convert multiple block types
Edit block spacing, orientation, and size. Create new blocks and adjust existing ones to meet your needs.
Edit and convert multiple line styles
Edit line width, thickness, and color. Create new line styles based on existing ones or from scratch.
Create and convert patterns
Create, modify, and convert existing patterns or create new ones.

Layers with Content Preview: Layers can now display their content as a preview when you edit them. Previews show what their layers will look like if they’re edited or transformed. This is a great way to see changes to your drawing before committing them to a drawing.
