in capture the flag, two teams face off to capture the flag in the most fast-paced mode possible. each team’s goal is to secure the other team’s base. however, there’s also the bonus of capturing enemies that fall during the match.

this release includes an entire new mode called rush mode. in rush mode, a small number of players are selected to become the “rush” players; these are all in one of four teams. rush is a fast-paced team-based mode in which the team which kills the most players within a time limit will win. we’ve changed the timing of the rounds and introduced a scoring system into rush to make the points go quicker and make rush a bit more fun.

here’s a pretty good guide to some of the more common patches and what they do. it’s worth pointing out that it’s really at your own discretion as to what settings you use and what games you play; some people keep it to minimums while others like everything on high. as you can see from the images above, while things can look good at low settings, they go to hell at high, and you can see what happens when you leave a game running on high without a screen saver (obviously not recommended, sorry).

when you first start, you’ll get a huge pre-prepared message stating that this game is for some reason not supported on your computer, and the only things it will allow you to do are close it or check your disc for damage. in actuality, you don’t even need to worry about checking the disc; you will not be prompted to do so.

the game is pre-set to the lowest graphics setting in order to minimize any potential problems, but if you want to go along for the ride, simply switch the setting up top of the main menu to the highest you’d like it to run.

then there’s the campaign. during the earlier levels, the missions are standard, and it’s easy to catch up to where you were. there is a lot to do in bad company 2 and that’s great, but the simple missions can chew up the time pretty quickly. i was getting bored of the story-based missions by the time i’d done with the sixth one and was itching for the back-to-the-drawing-board action that would be brought to me after the first hour. fortunately, the missions reveal themselves quickly in large firefights where you’ll be jumping out of helicopters, driving tanks and going up against thousands of enemy troops. this frees up a lot of time on the campaign to throw you into huge battles, but also throws an interesting twist into the missions. what happens is that instead of loading into a map in your vehicle, you head out in the first-person and you’re pretty much free to wander around the map. there are objectives to complete and you’ll either get some sort of reward for completing them, or you’ll be asked to complete a more interesting mission. there are moments where you’re in a situation where you’re surrounded by a lot of enemy forces and you need to get through the middle of them. the most interesting missions call for you to choose what kind of mission you want to run. do you stick to the main storyline, or do you try to do some fun additional things? you’ll even be handed a different amount of objectives depending on your choice.
the bad company 2 multiplayer isn’t as difficult as the last game, and that’s a good thing. the only modes available for the xbox 360 are deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag and domination, with one mode called clan matches and another that’s not detailed. they’re all self-explanatory and are similar in ways to call of duty. you get your basic weapons, such as smgs, lmgs and assault rifles, and upgrades are available for all of these. a lot of the animations are done well, and weapon and vehicle customization isn’t too difficult to pull off. however, the experience can get a little stale if you’re playing with mostly the same few people every time. there are plenty of weapons to play with, and there’s a custom weapon crafting system, but nothing else comes close to call of duty’s. i didn’t have a problem with it, because it wasn’t what this game was about. the bad company 2 multiplayer packs in a lot of modes to play. all of them are fun, but the one that’s closest to the call of duty style of play is the domination mode. there are three sides to this mode, and the winning team can expand their map area by the number of flags at their own team’s base. the winning team also earns points and they’ll earn more points by killing enemies rather than capturing flags, and their team gains more points for killing enemy players rather than capturing flags. it’s pretty difficult to get a team that’s in the middle of points, but either end of the spectrum has a strategy that can work. in one round i played with a group of three people, and my team was always either dead last or dead last for points. in the other round i had one player who set the round timer and only allowed kills, and my side of the game was hands down the best.
