Byomkeshwas first published in the Satyanweshiin 1932. The book is written in western dialect (Marathi) and revolves around the case of a student, Manoj Kumar, who used the name of Byomkesh to solve a crime in Kolkata. He is sent to Chinabazar, a densely-populated colony of India, under the name of Kumar to investigate the murder of a girl with the help of a detective agency. Kumar, a blunt ‘sahib‘in the eyes of the locals, falls in love with Ayesha, who is involved in the case. He forces her to marry him.

The book that we have adapted into this film is a 20th century update of the story. The film has retained the essence of the novel, its characters and the language but has included some new characters and a new location. This is the best adaptation of any of the Byomkesh Bakshi films, says Dutt. The director of the film has given it a new twist and made it more accessible and fair to the audience.

The book Satyanweshiwas originally written in the Marathi language, yet Bandyopadhyay has managed to capture the essence of the city, weaves a plot that has suspense, mystery and drama. In the film, we have added many things to the story. The story is told from the point of view of Byomkesh. The director has maintained the realistic tone. The story is simpler than the original, the film has a different thrust.

Bandyopadhyay can draw inspiration from anything. He draws inspiration from horticulture, anthropology, history, even his wife. A good example of this is the story Alligator which starts with an intriguing line about how Byomkesh, on a sultry moonlit evening, was chasing a bullock cart which was loaded with luscious ripe mangoes. The cart was being driven by an antiques seller to visit a certain house, which he wanted to sell. After a lot of hard work, and a lot of legal wrangling, Byomkesh ends up an owner of a near-pristine replica of a famous museum, in a faraway city. It is an extraordinary tale which he wrote about his own experiences and perception of how he got to own such a priceless artifact. The story, however, does not dwell on the monument per se, but on the character of the man who owned it. It is a tale of his innocence and childlike joy which he expresses when the book gets delivered. It is a story of the way he reacted towards the reality in which he found himself.
