Here’s what you get:Surgical splinting is often necessary following spine surgery to immobilize the spine and to promote fusion of the spine segments after an operation. Prior art surgical splints typically comprise a pair of side-by-side splints with a patient-insertable frame member having a pair of gripping devices to hold the frame member at opposing sides of the spine. The gripping devices are typically inserted through pre-drilled holes in the frame member of the splint.
The dorsal approach is the least traumatic of all the approaches to the spine. While the posterior approach to the spine leaves greater tissue damage and tends to reduce nerve function at the surgical site, the dorsal approach requires that a channel be drilled in the spinal bone to receive one or more spinal rods. After the spinal rods are inserted, the channel is filled with bone graft material. The graft material becomes incorporated into the bone and promotes fusion of the bone segments. One aspect of the dorsal approach is to place a rod between the vertebral segments to immobilize the segments and hold the vertebrae adjacent to one another. Another aspect is to cause bone graft material to be incorporated between the vertebral segments.
The procedure of implanting a surgical spinal implant can be challenging to the surgeon for a variety of reasons. Firstly, the procedure typically includes the insertion of spinal rods, often in multiple segments. Secondly, the anterior approach for the insertion of the surgical implant requires the annular annulus to be preserved. Finally, the device used to insert the surgical implant must be able to provide appropriate locking for the device and maximize the area for the graft material. As a result, the rods and implants used in conjunction with the dorsal approach can be difficult to insert and difficult to properly orient.
