cisco asa is an additional layer of security that provides network security services. to provide this type of additional security, cisco asa adds two new types of stateful policies. this enables cisco asa to provide double data, bandwidth, and traffic security. the first type of stateful policy is stateful firewalling. stateful firewalling provides security services at the boundary between a protected network and an untrusted network.

the second type of stateful policy is stateful inspection. stateful inspection can be deployed on a per-interface basis. for example, an http stateful inspection policy can be applied to every interface in a network. in this way, the stateful inspection can protect against udp, tcp, and icmp based attacks.

a local traffic filter (ltq) uses information from the acl and filtering rules and adjusts the weighted score in the access control decision. it re-orders the list of rules and puts more of the relevant rules at the front.

for example, the ipsec rule with the higher ipsec score is given the highest priority in comparison to the ipsec rule with the lower ipsec score. the high ipsec score can be seen as an evidence factor. the relevance of the evidence factors depends on the interface and the access policy to the protected network. furthermore, multiple evidence factors are combined to determine the access decision.

cisco asa software provides for multiple feature sets that can be enabled in a single asa device. feature sets are typically used to provide different levels of security features. feature sets are available for all of the platforms. for more information, see the cisco asa feature set list.

the access list entries are automatically evaluated based on packet age when no ip source or destination address match criteria. you can override this by using thelogkeyword to specify the level of logging to be performed by using a value of 3 or 4 to force the access list to be evaluated and to log access attempt (inspect) logs to the console.
after enabling a feature or options, you must complete the configuration by setting the appropriate option or command-line parameter. this example lists the following configuration settings for telnet authentication: setting value(s) user-list none telnet-state-synchronization no user-login telnet password-login none
tacacs+ authentication should be enabled on a router in a similar manner to how it is enabled for an asa. however, different clients, such as web browsers or telnet, may attempt to communicate with the router. it is highly recommended that authentication be enabled, such as using the following command:
