code geass also has some great use of music, with the first series using the soundtrack from the movie battle royale, and the second taking a much more original approach. for the first series, i really enjoyed the opening theme, which was just enough to make me want to watch the series. the second series has some interesting choices for the opening and ending theme, and the pace of the music is perfect for the pace of the show. the show features a wide variety of music, and it is fun to listen to each episode and hear the different genres it incorporates. it reminds me a lot of the opening theme of fullmetal alchemist, which has similar tones. one of my favourite songs is the opening theme of the second season, “colors”, which was used in the movie of the same name. it is an upbeat song with a great tempo that is still a little melancholy, which perfectly fits the series. but the most emotional part of the show is the ending theme of the second season, “remember”, which is performed by main character suzaku kururugi in the battle royale movie. it is a beautiful, slightly sad song that really brings a poignant ending to the series. i really wish that the series had some more songs like this.

another thing that i really enjoyed about code geass is the cast of supporting characters. the black knights are clearly the main focus of the show, but there are a lot of interesting characters that are well developed. the villains are probably the most interesting part of the show, with the black knights often fighting against characters that are as twisted as they are. the first antagonist of the show is lelouchs half-brother, mordred, who is clearly a sociopath. his actions against lelouch are based on hatred and desire for power, and he is given a great deal of screen time to show this. after lelouch leaves, mordred continues to fight, becoming more powerful and more evil. the second antagonist is another lelouchs friend, kallen stadtfeld, who is a natural rebel and has a particularly compelling relationship with suzaku kururugi, which does provide some of the most interesting moments of the series. while the black knights fight lelouch and mordred, the empire is composed of the black knights and the black knights.

the third season begins with lelouch and suzaku’s victory over the black knights. as the two return to ashford, they are greeted by two girls who they assume to be nunnally and c.c.. however, they are revealed to be a clone of c. and nunnally, created by vileth. this revelation immediately changes the nature of the remainder of the series, as zero attempts to maintain the illusion of his geass’ power to maintain the world’s stability. lelouch begins to question the true nature of his geass and the identity of the world’s ultimate enemy, the black knights. he resolves to pursue a way to bring down the black knights, while at the same time, kallen proceeds to take down the entire organization. before kallen’s rebellion is fully understood, vileth unveils a new geass, one that will bring more suffering to the world than his previous geass: death’s hand.
lelouch’s life is suddenly upended when he receives a video clip of his mother’s death. lelouch is shocked at the news, but is quickly brought back to reality as vileth reveals that the main antagonist of the series is a clone named vileth, who was created in order to test lelouch’s geass power. vileth creates a clone of c.c., which is then used to manipulate nunnally and rolo into believing that they were c. and nunnally. once the deception is complete, vileth uses the video clip to manipulate lelouch into thinking that his geass was the power that killed his mother, and thus, the power that destroyed the world. having realized that the black knights are the real threat, lelouch vows to destroy them, while kallen continues to take down the organization. suzaku is revealed to be the true leader of the black knights, who joins lelouch in his fight against the organization, despite the fact that he was only using them to uncover his identity.
