Counter-Strike 1.6 was released on September 12, 2003. ^[42] The game was only available for Windows platforms at first and was released along with the Steam client, providing a new interface for multiplayer gaming. ^[43] The game was never released for Linux or Mac OS X systems. Because the game was free-to-play, the community created several alternate mod versions, such as the CS-Go and Counter-Strike: Source variants. Each of the dozens of community-made maps and mods contained a link back to the original Counter-Strike 1.6 files, allowing players to play the mod version of the game on top of their original version. ^[44] After a large initial community backlash and Valve being accused of being greedy with their free-to-play business model, Valve released Counter-Strike 1.6 in China around March 2007, making it the first non-Anglophone game to do so. ^[45] The cheats and features of the Chinese version of the game were mostly the same as the ones found in the English version of the game, with one exception: the internet connection settings were changed to Chinese servers. ^[45]

Aside from the new interface, the multiplayer in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is also quite different than the original Counter-Strike. The old auto-aim system was simplified, leaving the player to aim by movement and with the crosshair rather than using a lock-on system. Most of the game consists of players moving through and shooting at an enemy base in a 1v1 or 3v3 game mode. This is all rendered in the Half-Life 2 engine. The original build of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive had online multiplayer, but Valve disabled online play until their first CS:GO championship match at the Game 5 of the 2013 season. After Valve announced that they will not only host the 2012 and 2013 championships but also the 2014 and 2015 championships as well, the online multiplayer was re-enabled for all players.
