after playing the telegenic love interest to reese witherspoon in cruel intentions, dakota fanning went on to star in a host of acclaimed films including little miss sunshine, the secret life of bees and the oscar-nominated the devil wears prada. the 22-year-old actress, who shares three children with dexter director john singleton, dated her co-star from 2009 to 2013.

cruel intentions is a very entertaining film that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. it’s not as cool and dangerous as other teen flicks, but it is packed with laughter and plenty of substance.

cruel intentions is rated r for strong sexual content, language, and some drug material. characters drink and use illegal substances, including marijuana, cocaine, and ecstasy. characters smoke in a scene with sex-and-drug-related imagery. characters have sex on a bed, with the girl on top. the characters also have sex in a car, in a bathroom, and in the woods. they have sex with oral sex and anal sex and are sometimes seen naked during sex. some characters refer to sex in euphemisms, including sex, the act of sex, the name of the male sex organ, and onanistic sex.

Gellar’s Cruel Intentions death scenes were widely praised for their realism. Entertainment Weekly called Gellar’s death scene the “best of any teen drama” it had ever seen. Producers of the reboot were praised for finding an actress to play the lead who could pull off the harrowing and poignant part. Both Gilmore Girls and 7th Heaven fans knew her as a relatively young, innocent high school student, and not the sexually voracious seductress she played in Ringer.
Like the reboot, Cruel Intentions ’s script is full of contradictions. It contains the message that “you have a choice” while the final scene tells us that choosing the right path is the only way forward. Lacross, its characters and their situation do not offer any final answers. In fact, they may offer no answers at all, leaving viewers to reach their own conclusions.
The screenplay was rewritten by Carolines dad, who also executive-produced the 1990 version, back into the kind of self-important cocktease that Paul Verhoeven had planned; this time around he filled the mix with a few comic touches, notably Cruel Intentionss zombie characters.
Pics Entertainment has bestowed Cruel Intentions with a Blu-ray release that includes a second disc of extras, including: two audio commentaries (one by Kumble), a featurette about the original film, De Laurentiis and Gerber cutting the film together, a look back at the year 2000, the creator’s directorial commentary, and a look back at 1999 through the lens of the movie’s onscreen teen couples (who look, even at nineteen, like they could be their parents’ offspring).
