A security researcher has been warning of a bug in Firefox that could allow attackers to leak a user’s login credentials to websites.

Benjamin Caudill of Liferay said the Internet browser version 4.0 of Mozilla’s Firefox could leak details of cookies and the text of a page to other websites, even when a user had properly set-up their browsing privacy settings.

Caudill said the problem was triggered if a user copied and pasted their username and password from a website into Firefox. Caudill said the bug would have been triggered even if Firefox’s cookie management settings were set to “private.”

Such settings mean that when a user clicks the ‘Remember my choice’ button, they would be emailed and given a randomly generated password for future use and would not be stored locally. In other words, the user would not be able to retrieve the password themselves.

This privacy setting is part of the option set of the latest version of Firefox 3.6 and can be enabled in the preferences menu, and it is considered a best practice for users.

The bug occurs when the user then pastes the text for a website into Firefox so they can login. Caudill said if the user, who is now on the second level of a website that contains sensitive information, opens the Firefox’s web security settings and changes the login cookie to “private,” then Firefox will store the details of the page, including the user’s login details, locally.

“Once the user has enabled their cookies to be private, Mozilla does not try to locate and delete cookies at all,” Caudill said.

“This means that, if the user has submitted their username and password and if they have enabled the cookies in the browser to be private, that to a third-party user, the password, username, and indeed the whole third-party page will appear to be stored by Mozilla locally. The user would only have been aware of these events if the bugs above had been exploited.”

Mozilla has confirmed Caudill’s finding of the bug and is planning to fix it on a later version of Firefox.

Caudill said that would not be sufficient to resolve the issue as Firefox 4.0.1 is still under development. Caudill said the bug was not exploited in the wild
