also in the 1980s, you could hear a kid say, “i’m just a little x-box,” and you knew what he meant. sure, this is sort of a pointless connection, but the fact that kids were talking about games while they were talking about computers in the 1980s is a little mind-blowing. it’s also worth noting that in the ’80s, cyborgs were about as common in science fiction as they are now. cyborg is one of the first films to feature a computer-controlled person as a main character.

released in 1989, cyborg was directed by albert pyun, who had previously directed a couple mst3k episodes. his alien from la and captain america had both been popular and well-regarded, so it’s probably no surprise that cyborg was well-received.

the movie features a character who can’t be human. cyborg is the name given to this character. the movie is about a person who is a cyborg, and a person who has developed a program that can turn people into cyborgs. this is the main reason i chose to watch cyborg in the first place. i’ve never seen anything like it before. this was a whole new world to me.

i think that this release is a pretty good blu-ray edition of a film that never should have seen the light of day. the supplemental material is really helpful, too. i’ve never seen an interview with pyun about cyborg, and his commentary is interesting and in-depth. he talks about the years he spent as a crew member on the sets of captain america and masters of the universe. he talks about what they did on the set of the masters of the universe 2 (the masters of the universe/m2 was a really odd beast, kind of a weird combination of the two franchises). he was a contract director for columbia pictures, whose next job was to make the captain america 2 (pyun was also doing some re-shoots on alien from la).

but the big news is the blu-ray disc. shout! factory has gone the extra mile and created a two-disc, four-part blu-ray with a great featurette and a bunch of other goodies. the blu-ray comes with two featurettes — one on the film’s first cut, the other on the updated cut — on disc one. disc two features a filmography with interviews with van damme and the rest of the cast. disc three comes with all the films on the disc — not counting the two disc set — as well as a pair of commentaries and a bunch of behind-the-scenes featurettes. and, for anyone who wants a hardcore, uncut version of cyborg, disc four comes with van damme’s commentary track from the original 1989 vhs release on a separate disc.
