I’ll just add that, while Dungeons & Dragons was one of the first great roleplaying games for computers, I’m sure it’s only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to roleplaying games for computers. 🙂
Have you seen The Dark Eye – Long Winter? It’s a roleplaying game set in an epic fantasy world. It’s really unique, even for a computer game. There’s no classes or quests, but the sheer volume of options in terms of how to play your character (physical and mental abilities, character class, attribute modifiers, monster, dungeon and world mastery skills, magic system, etc.) really gives it flexibility in really innovative ways that would never be done in a standard game. For example, according to the ability tree (which might be a bit hard to read in the screenshot), a player with 4 Wisdom could have a level 4 Ability of “Shadow”, which is a “spell” that allows your character to walk into shadows and weave magical spells. This ability could be quite useful to a character of a certain kind, but for most PCs, it will probably be a dud. The Player’s Handbook for The Dark Eye has a lot of information on the game mechanics that you’ll be learning during the game.
