the striking expressionist works of the german filmmaker f.w. murnau provide the backbone of this adaptation of an american successful musical comedy film of the 1920s. the film details the lives and romances of characters who descend upon the fictional mid-western town of greasley for a singing competition. with its urban and country interludes, its use of humanism and its satire, the piece is a fascinating cross-over of cinemaiature.

milk has been packaged with a substantial amount of promotion, in an attempt to bring the filmfest hype to the widest possible audience. the result is a tantalizing bit of kitsch that succeeds in drawing attention to itself and cliches, with flashes of humor and even optimism, but ultimately falls short of offering the viewer anything truly engaging or new.

leonardo dicaprio’s filmography is so full of movies based on true events that it’s only a matter of time before we see someone take a crack at adapting the biography of cornelius ryan. ryan became famous for his nonfiction book “the last battle,” which chronicled the incredible events that lead to victory in the battle of iwo jima. no hollywood movie has attempted to fictionalize this story, but this canadian/japans production offers a pretty grim take, complete with machine gun fire and grenades.

for a film with such a huge global fan base like d.w. griffiths intolerance, there really wasn’t a lot of information available on this imax short subject, which made hunting it down an adventure in its own right. the film features a fairly graphic intermix of newsreel footage and actual historical reenactments of religious violence to create a grandiose orchestral score. it charts the history of the conflict between the zionist movement and the palestinian nationalist movement in modern-day palestine. here the arabs suffer greatly at the hands of the turks. but the zionist movement to establish a jewish state in the region continues and becomes intertwined with the events of the first world war. this is the final movement of the conflict.

audition, takashi miike. a film about a retired cop whose dodgy public-drinking habits lead to an impromptu audition to star in a horror film. its a winner of the grand prix at the 1981 cannes film festival. and although it has never been released in the uk until now, its one of the most significant films to have ever come out of japan (check out the storyboards of the earlier, more psychedelic japanese version on youtube). i love the evocative use of colour and sound design throughout. the songs add to the humour and also the disturbing atmosphere, and i really think that the more obscure artists have a much more relatable sound than your average mainstream ones, and theyre all quite good as well.
a suburban tokyo housewife, free-spirited mother and budding artist comes to the attention of the police after an apparent robbery goes awry. reeling from the tragedy of having been raped by a stranger, in the days following the attack, she invents an elaborate lie, which leads to a tale of revenge and sexual power. an excellent character study, and at once a lesbian love story, a feminist detective film and a mixture of polari and classi parody, this movie is one of the films first achievements, and an essential of ozus work. many years later, in his magnum opus tokyo story, the director would take the idea of friendship, or lack of it, and marry it to his filmiature, mirroring the relationship between the two central characters.
a troubled young boy struggling to deal with his parents loss of love and money, in this family drama, becomes romantically drawn into the lives of the three women who manage his dead brother s estate.
