Photoshop’s basic features include:
In this post we’ll focus on the desktop version of Photoshop. Photoshop Lightroom is a powerful and robust alternative to Photoshop that is gaining popularity among photographers and others. If you haven’t yet explored Photoshop Lightroom, we recommend checking out our guide on how to use Lightroom.
Here are the basic features that you’ll need to know to get up and running with Photoshop.
1. What is Photoshop?
If you have some basic Photoshop knowledge, you may already know what Adobe Photoshop is. It’s an image editing program whose name has become a verb.
Adobe Photoshop is well regarded as an industry standard photo editing program and is widely used.

2. Photoshop’s features
Adobe Photoshop is made up of individual tools that enable you to create, manipulate, and output raster images.
Many of the tools in Photoshop are quite familiar to photographers, graphic artists and others that use image editing programs. There are also some unique features to Photoshop, most notably its layer system and built-in digital asset management features.
Photoshop layers allow you to work on multiple edits at once by keeping each on its own layer. Because the layers are maintained in memory, they don’t get covered up by other edits that are being done on the same layer. This helps avoid error-prone, line-by-line image editing.
Digital asset management tools allow you to automatically organize and manage your collection of images and objects. The file management interface includes batch renaming and other tools for creating and organizing your digital assets.
3. Working with Photoshop in a nutshell
It’s easiest to understand Photoshop’s features by understanding how they work together. Here’s a quick breakdown of how to use Photoshop.
Open Photoshop and open a new image or open an existing image from your computer’s storage drive.
Examine the background layer of the image to see the original background of the image.
Select the tool of your choice for making edits. (for example, multiply an image layer by 100)
Create and save a new file.
The Edit > Adjustments panel will display the controls for the layer that you’ve selected.
Photoshop has a built-in feature called “Layers,” a common image editing program concept.

Some features are not available in the free version but are an option in the paid version, such as Retouching, but the features are similar in each version, except the additional ability to create action sets for automation, which is only available in Elements.

Photoshop Elements displays the presets available in the audio settings for all supported audio files:
(by default, Adobe Premiere Pro displays the same presets as Photoshop Elements)
Media Type Auto – selects the correct media type based on file extension extension. Check the “Enable Auto Selection” box to automatically select the media type for the current file extension.
N.B: For most media types, the “Auto Selection” can be changed by selecting the media type in the presets list, or in the “Options” section.
N.B: The presets can be changed in the same way, but by clicking on the browse icon next to the media type.
N.B: When creating new files, you can select the media type manually by clicking the Browse icon in the presets list.
N.B: The media type preview box can be changed by moving the slider bar.
Mono/Stereo Use the Mono/Stereo setting to make your audio mono or stereo. You can convert to mono by selecting “Mono”, or from mono to stereo by selecting “Stereo”. Stereo (2 channels) will display the audio in both right and left channels. Mono (1 channel) will display only the left audio channel. “Switch Output” will only make this change when the current audio file is open, and doesn’t apply to background music or audio played via programs that you might have running in the background.
Compressor/Limiter A clipping algorithm that reduces volume by reducing overall volume when the maximum allowed digital level is reached. Various attributes control the output volume.
A/B/C Compression in which a constant gain factor is applied to the audio to produce a constant output level. The Audio Samplerate is kept the same. The A/B/C compression results in a compression range that extends from a stereo output for A, to fully mono for C. The A Compression

Select an area of the image you want to copy from, click on the Clone Stamp tool and press the Alt/Option key.
Use the Brush tool to select a color. You can choose the color for the pixels you want to copy with the Brush tool or you can select the color from the Color Picker window.
Right-click and select Copy. A colored square appears to show the area you have selected.
Press the Alt/Option key to change the Brush tool to the Paintbrush tool.
Select a new area where you want to paste the image. You may need to press Ctrl/Cmd+Alt/Option+Shift+A to select an object in the image.
Press the Paste button. A colored square appears where you clicked.
Select the Eraser tool.
Press the Alt/Option key to change the Eraser tool to the Black Brush.
Right-click and select Erase to remove parts of the color you have selected.
Photoshop also comes with a wide variety of fonts, brushes, and other tools that allow you to add a personal touch to your images. By learning these tools, you’ll be able to create effects that might take you a lot of time to achieve with other tools.
Photoshop also allows you to add layers to your document to organize complex images.
Compression
When a digital image is stored on your computer, it is compressed, allowing for faster access. This reduces the file size and allows for faster download. If you want to send a photo to someone who does not have Photoshop or Lightroom, you may have to reduce the size of the file first.
RAW Files
RAW files allow you to see the actual picture you take. They can capture what your camera sees, and you can adjust the information you get by using the tools provided. The disadvantage of using the RAW file is that you have to process the image and redo the exposure, contrast, and color balance.
