Q:
Calculation of collision probability
I am working on a project where, given a ball and a column, I want to calculate the probability that the ball collides with the column. I have to make some assumptions about the ball-column system (like that both the ball and the column have the same dimensions etc.).
The most straightforward approach to achieve this seems to be to first calculate the distance between the ball and the column (assuming the ball is a Point object), and then check whether this distance is less than a certain threshold (say 0.1).
This brings me to my question: Is it correct to assume that if the distance between the ball and the column is smaller than 0.1, then the ball will hit the column? I can’t think of a counter-example to this, but maybe someone can.
I am not looking for any code for this solution, but rather some confirmation (if this assumption is correct) or a counterexample (if it’s not).
