I’m using git and I want to use git for my version control too. But, I am used to using apt-get on all my machines for new packages, and not having to do this with a git repo is a pain.
How can I update all branches of all packages using git?

You can run apt-get update and apt-get upgrade on all branches of all packages.
But, that doesn’t seem to be the answer to your question.

While apt-get install / update / upgrade (and apt-cache search for specific packages) is part of the’standard’ tools on Linux distributions, just running apt-get without any special flags or arguments is not.
The command-line arguments for apt-get are documented here.
The “-s” flag to apt-get should be one that you use often, as it tells apt-get to simply read the status of your installed packages without installing them.
