“Flight of the Amazon Queen: 25th Anniversary Edition” is the third title in the “Flight of the Amazon Queen” series, the first two entries being the original “Flight of the Amazon Queen” and “Flight of the Amazon Queen II”. It is a role playing game (RPG), first released in 1992, on the NEC-PC98, MSX and FM Towns platforms.
The gameplay style of this title is that of a traditional Ultima-style RPG, with plenty of sidequests, lots of gold and magical items and a complex interconnected and tactical party system with multiple classes and for every class multiple skills and weapon and armor skills/weapons. The main focus of this title, however, lies in its accurate historical setting, with the setting changing from game to game depending on which periods the player character has visited, and its detailed yet easy to follow and well thought out story, divided into 8 episodes.
Before the player can embark on the game’s main storyline, however, the player must first find a home and a place to live, then attend the local primary school which teaches the player character a new skill, then travel to the Capital, help to establish a new town and start a new family. The player can choose to either make a better life for the Amazonian tribe or join the Mananga Chief, a group of bandits, who operate in the southern jungle.
From here, the player can choose to embark on the main storyline, which continues until the player character either joins the Chief or is defeated. The player can choose any of the different villains and/or protagonists of each episode and have the chance to earn new skills that will grant a different upgrade after the correct new skill is selected.
The game has a complex customization system and a parallel role-playing system, both of which will require significant time and effort. The player can choose a number of different classes, depending on the type of character the player intends to become, and also the player can select a number of different skills with different levels, as well as various weapon and armor skills. By doing this the player will eventually earn new weapon and armor skills/weapons and the player can customize his or her character’s appearance to fit his or her specific role. The player must also decide how to rank up and compare all of these skills, eventually unlocking all of their weapon and armor abilities.

  What’s new:

  No One

  One particular experiment I’ve been trying lately is to “become no one.”

  I’m a very well know author. I’m well known at least within my culture and my community as an illustrator. I can be recognized everywhere I go and always have people express interest in my work and want to get to know me. To maintain that balance, I like to keep myself “invisible” and out of the spotlight.

  At the same time, because I’ve been a writer my whole life, I’m very comfortable being a public speaker and blogger on writing topics. I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned in the process of learning to write well.

  But I’m also well known for having a very strong opinion about all things IT. I happily contribute to IT-related blogs and podcasts on writing topics, some of which not many others would enjoy. I’m confident that if someone from the writing community found me reading one of my IT blogs, they’d think, “Well, how can such a smart person waste time on such obsolete thoughts. What can this guy know?”

  Maybe they would even think I’m a full-time drunk.

  That’s something I should keep to myself.

  All of which paints a portrait of someone who is well known but also rarely seen. The public persona of someone like that can be exhausting. It sounds like I want to get lost in anonymity so I won’t be a nuisance.

  In fact, everything about being a public speaker and blogger is designed to keep me from being a nuisance. I have a limited audience. I don’t want to be spreading my ideas by talking too much to people. I want people to find me through my words, not the other way around. I don’t want to confuse or annoy people. I don’t want to get too specific when I talk about technology. If I do that, I’m going to come across as a wet blanket. (Fortunately, there are loads of more light-hearted, also helpful and technical, IT blogs on the internet.)

  I don’t want to appear uncivil by answering questions or having a conversation. If I’m not careful, I’ll come across as a rotten co-host/cheerleader for its audience.
