extensis upgraded teamsync in version 6 to support a large number of font formats, including opentype. while theres no obvious reason for me to upgrade, i did notice it is possible to drag fonts from one version to the other. i was particularly interested in seeing if this worked with the new odml format. thats a cross-platform file format used by apple to save fonts, and i use it all the time in after effects.

all in all, this is a good upgrade. if youre not a teamsync user and dont need to have your fonts in multiple places, this is a good version of suitcase fusion. but if youre a teamsync user, or need your fonts cross-platform, it might be worth the price.

for both the new and old versions of suitcase fusion, the following file types are supported:

• truetype (.ttf)
• opentype (.otf)
• suitcase subsets (.cff)
• suitcase features (.stf)
• open type features (.otf)
• other (.afm)

the plug-ins work as they always have, but the process to install them is a little different. in a nutshell, suitcase fusion 7 does not come with a zip archive, but instead, it comes as a microsoft web installer (msiexec), which is downloaded to your computer. once you download the suitcase fusion 7 zip archive, unzip and launch the installer, which will set up the plug-ins.

the features in suitcase fusion are now stored in the suitcase subsets and open type feature files. the file name for each of these can be seen in the installer output when the plug-ins are installed. (if you are curious, the output is generated by the msiexec command-line tool that is included with the suitcase fusion installer.)

teamsync costs $96 per user per year, with a two license minimum. a user (for example, a freelancer) can be a member of multiple teamsync teams. because the library for each team appears as a separate library in suitcase fusion 7, the user may switch freely among them to work on projects for different teams.
because many designers work on multiple computers and need to have access to the same fonts and font environment in multiple locations, suitcase fusion 7 includes a two-location license. to simplify using the same font library on two computers, version 7 adds the typesync feature. when enabled, typesync backs up all your fonts and suitcase setup to a server hosted by extensis and updates your backup every 15 minutes. you can then access your library from any computer running suitcase fusion 7; just log into extensis server from the second computer for immediate access to your fonts and suitcase setup. (if you need to quickly bolt from your current location after making changes in suitcase, you can also manually force an update.)
