The Hughes.net Hn7000S is a new class of modem. This modem allows you to use your currently used router to provide a modem service to your telephone. This works fine for your desk phone but does not work for your VoIP phone. Unfortunately many companies mandate a monthly fee for this service which you receive to your home router and therefor the Hn7000S service has to be disabled. Hughes.net has developed a USB cradle adapter that you can use to “bridge” your VOIP phone to the Hn7000S modem. This adapter is called the Hn7000S MPL and runs in the MSC mode on the modem. This adapter is limited to a few USB devices. The Hughes.net Hn7000S modem itself has no provision for connecting to a network. However it has provision for connecting to a QoS router. Many Hughes.net customers are now able to easily deploy this modem and QoS router. Unfortunately there are still many Hn7000S units on the market without a QoS router. To fix this problem Hn7000S users have been required to be connected to the Internet to update the latest firmware. This can be a major problem and seems hard to impossible to keep up with.

The FAPGuard software compliments the Hn7000S unit. The modem is configurable by simple self contained data tables in the applet. The modem automatically connects to a QoS router for Internet access and is updateable remotely. The applet tells you what the modem is doing and how the modem is communicating. You can easily connect to the Hn7000S modem and modify the modem settings. The modem can be turned off, simply connect to an open QoS router and you are online. Since the modem can be updated remotely, you no longer need to to make your 2 way phone call.

A solid gadget for an affordable price

The design and construction of FAPGuard is solid and its features are simple and intuitive. However, one of the biggest issues with this gadget is that it does not work with a Hughes.net Hn7000S.

The design is solid and the construction is sturdy, but it doesn’t make this gadget as reliable as other products in this price range that support more than one modem brand.

At this price range you can’t expect the highest quality material, it is what it is. But, it’s built to last. I’ve been using it for nearly two weeks now and it hasn’t let me down.

Good case and easy to fix the docking port that’s been brokedown.

For those who don’t know, hu.net modem store sells the hu.net hn7000s, this tool is not designed for it. It’s a tool to monitor the us bandwidth on it.

There is a “safe mode” that disables it, but in that mode, the speed of your hu.net modem is reduced. Please try it before buying.

Much has been done on the FAPGuard page since this review. I am not sure what added so much, but items have been fixed, files and descriptions updated, it looks like the guys at W4U have been fixing the bugs one by one.

I am going to release a new version of the FAPGuard. It has been somewhat a long development time but I hope you can enjoy it.

Opinion

FAPGuard was bought as a cheaper option then another. So far it’s been great. Comes with the special connectors to allow attaching the usb cable on the back of the hub, which is great. But, since this modem is not the one being monitored, it does not function with the Hn7000S, which is what you would expect from this
