if you’ve been a counter strike fan for years you’re probably disappointed by the lack of features and new weapons included. the single player campaign is a bit of a mixed bag, it’s not without its faults, but it also has a number of cool ideas and a few good levels. where it really hurts is the lack of anything to get into. this is counter strike, and despite gearbox saying it’s basically the same game, it isn’t. in fact, with the introduction of scripted storylines and the ct’s role as the good guys, things are made quite easy for the player. another disappointment is the lack of replayability. if you can’t be bothered to run every mission, there’s no point in picking it up.

the missions are short, very short and have no real sense of completion other than having achieved what the main objective was. you’ll use grenade launchers, molotov cocktails, shoulder-launched rocket launchers (i’m not entirely sure what that is), the odd sniper rifle, a sub-machine gun, a pistol and the main weapon, an m14 assault rifle. if all that sounds like a load of old bollocks, then you’re not alone. the long and the short of it is that the gameplay is extremely basic, and you’re not getting much of a challenge. if you’re up to the task, you’ll get a lot of action – the missions are brimming with movement, and most are littered with strategic choke points, which can be used to trap or stop opposing forces. and even if there are no direct confrontations, the missions tend to aim towards an artificial conclusion – your team is alerted to an enemy location, you have to join them and arrest the bad guys.

but it isn’t just about shooting. the game’s high quality engine does everything it needs to do. the maps are rich in detail, and the number of obstacles, allies and enemies is plentiful. but even as a gunslinger, the best way to play is with the sniper rifle, as its’ far more rewarding to move up to a chimney and shoot the head off a terrorist, or to do a clean headshot from behind a building, without feeling forced into a game where you have to ram your way through enemies, or step on them to gain an advantage.
speaking of shooting, you can take out enemies with a wide range of weapons. these include firearms, but also various machete and bomb-related devices. the machete is one of the best items – you can stand on a box and slice guys to death, or you can punch them in the face with it. you can also get a pickaxe, which is useful for destroying boxes on the floor.
