Developed by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004, Roblox was created as a browser-based platform allowing users to create their own games. In 2008, Roblox introduced the Programming API, which allowed users to code games in Lua, a language with a scripting-like syntax. A few days later, Roblox launched its website as a place for users to download and test their games. To play their games, players had to purchase Robux, a kind of virtual currency, by clicking on ads. Robux could be spent at Roblox’s virtual store, and some developers provided set goals in order to earn a certain number of Robux. At the end of 2008, Roblox Corporation had partnered with Tigsource to run its games, with those games then appearing in Tigsource’s platform.
In 2009, Roblox went free-to-download and offered its services to users without any membership requirement. It was reported that Roblox had reached 10 million active monthly users as of 2010. Roblox introduced the option for users to add real-world money to their accounts in 2012. In 2013, Roblox announced its collaboration with LEGO Mindstorms, allowing users to create their own games by programming their robots.
Ripla, a privately held company, bought Roblox in June 2013. According to TechCrunch, Ripla was offering $75 million, which made Roblox roughly three times as expensive as Slacker, which was sold to Groupon for $160 million in 2012. It was reported that Ripla wanted to port the Roblox platform to the Android and iOS operating systems, with the goal of making the Android port available in Q4 2013, but that work on the iOS port was suspended in 2014. With Tigsource having already sold all but four of its games to Ripla in 2013, the company subsequently sold all of the remaining games to a third party in October 2014, with subsequent titles being added to its catalog.
In October 2014, it was announced that the Tigsource network had been shut down, and that all its games had been removed from Roblox. In April 2015, the creator of the Dragon Factory game, Yarasilikha, reported that she had learned that Roblox had deleted her entire account and all of her credits for the game, removing her 70,000 points as a result. Roblox later restored her account and credited her points to an unused balance
