## Choosing a Single Photo Editor

The competition between graphics software companies has encouraged these software developers to come up with innovative ways to help consumers keep pace with the computer technology. Perhaps the cleverest of these efforts is Photoshop’s new Elements program (`www.adobe.com/products/elements.html`). This product makes it much easier for the average consumer to take photos and alter them using a single interface. But it’s not perfect. If you have a great collection of photos, in which some require sophisticated editing, the program may not be the best choice. Photoshop still has a few advantages. It has the more mature and robust functionality.

The newest versions of Photoshop are packed with features that are particularly useful to creative photographers, graphic designers and web designers.

Here’s a few of them:

Up/down cropping

In the 2016 version of Photoshop, you can crop a photo from any of its four corners. But the bottom two corners are harder to reach than the top two. The Adobe 2019 version of Photoshop has a nifty tool: Up/Down Crop.

With this tool, you can just drag the corner bar of the photo to cut it from any corner. The interesting part is that you can even move the crop frame without having to drag it. This should make it easy to move a crop frame during the edit.

When you finally crop a photo, it’s also easier to tap on it to apply one of the preset effects.

Bicubic filter

A fast and convenient way to improve the sharpness of a photo is to use the Bicubic filter. This is a great way to eliminate edge blurring. It’s similar to the smart sharpen in Apple’s Photo app or Instagram’s own sharpen feature.

You can apply this filter by selecting Crop. Crop a very rough version of the photo, open the filter and then apply a filter.

Quick fixes and other tools

The new Photoshop also has some handy tools that make photo editing and graphic design easier. It has a new tool bar along the top. On it are the Quick Fixes tool and other tools.

Examples of the tools include the Spot Healing tool, which is a great way to quickly fix bright spots on a photo. It’s been around for a while, but the 2019 version makes it more user-friendly.

Another tool is the Healing Brush, which was previously found in the right-click context menu. Now you can access it from the tool bar.

The new Healing Brush allows you to quickly erase a problem area from your photo. The Spot Healing tool lets you correct a single problem area from within the entire image.

You can also use the Erase tool to delete a rectangular region from a photo.

The Spot Healing tool and the Erase tool are very powerful, but they work best when you’re not working on a photo with many different levels of brightness.

Colts owner Woody Johnson regrets fine

COLTS owner Woody Johnson regrets his caustic fine of the Panthers’ Jonathan Stewart for fumbling, saying it was a misinterpretation by the league.

“Did they hand out the right fine for this? No,” Johnson said Wednesday. “I thought they had that rule wrong. It was a miscommunication.”

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who fined Johnson $250,000, sent a memo to teams Wednesday saying Johnson’s fine was for “at least one instance of reckless conduct.” The league’s statement said Johnson crossed a line by questioning the flag, and it also said Johnson’s comments were in violation of NFL policy.

“To be honest, it’s really not my place to get involved in the circumstances of a fine that’s handed out,” Johnson said.

“A lot of this is interpretation. It’s a fine that’s written in someone’s mind,” he added. “I was upset. I felt like I was being wrongly penalized. I’m not proud of what I said. There are a lot of rules in football that they don’t get right all the time.”

Johnson said he was not fined because of the issue of hard-to-see replay challenges.

“We were not punished because of the replay situation,” Johnson said. “It was just this misinterpretation of a rule.”

Johnson indicated he will appeal the fine. “I will fight this tooth and nail,” he said. “I have no hesitation. I’m going to fight this on every level.”

Stewart was ejected from the game after Johnson publicly confronted the league.

“I made some kind of comment to the ref, and they responded,” Johnson said. “I’m not going to get into it, other than to say I was upset with the call.”

Goodell and Johnson have a history. Johnson has been a vocal critic of the NFL’s decision to extend Goodell’s contract.

Nivo slider: lower bound of first slide

I am using the Nivo slider. Is it possible to make the first slide show ONLY a certain number of pixels? For example, if I have a 100% width image, how can I make it so that the first slide shows 50% width.

You may want to check out the Nivo 1.3 release candidate. The “nivo-slider” package (API and docs) is available on npm as well as a few demos.
With the latest release, you’ll have access to the “nivoOffset” setting in both the API and HTML.
