first, youll want to remove the outer strings from the guitar. if there are five strings, there should be three middle strings and two outer strings. gently pull on the outer strings around the nut toward the belly of the guitar, which will free up the third middle string and then the bottom outer string (for a five string). they will come off the headstock rather easily, and you can easily grasp and pull up on the string to remove it.

if the guitar has a guitar center, youll usually want to remove it as well, since the guitar center has to be removed before you can install a new truss rod. try to align the truss rod to the center of the guitar, and youre done! but if you re-install the center, your guitar will be out of balance, and youll have to either buy a new truss rod or balance your guitar. otherwise, youll have to adjust the nut width (see below).

once youve removed the strings, youll want to adjust the nut width on your guitar. this will compensate for the strings being removed (and remove the need for them). to do this, youll want to first adjust your truss rod to have a sense of when the bridge starts to bow outward. if youre not that familiar with a truss rod, the easiest way to do this is to take off a string or two and adjust your truss rod to make the bridge bows outward. the point at which the bridge bows outward will tell you the nut width. my fender american standard is only supposed to allow for about an 18mm nut width, and it bows outward like it should be at a 10mm nut width, so i use an adjustable truss rod to hold it at my calculated nut width. if you get it right, youll notice that the truss rod is too tight, and your bridge won’t bow outward enough – and if you get it too far, the bridge bows outward too much, the nut will sag, the action will be way off and the sound will suck. so test it!

as i’m typing this, i’m looking up a serial number. i don’t know what model it’s for, but a quick google search for’serial number of x’ will sometimes give you the answer, or at least a reasonable starting point.don’t limit your serial lookups to your favorite manufacturers. find out what serial numbers are used for other brands and models, and try them out. cross reference the results.serial numbers on guitars are easy to miss since they are usually on the back of the headstock, and often hidden behind hardware and/or painted over.if you are unable to find the serial number on the headstock, try looking at the frets – small characters are usually printed there.take your guitar to a competent repair shop if you can find the correct year. not just any repair shop. look for a shop that specializes in vintage instruments and you can be sure they’ll be able to spot a fake. be sure to get a receipt if they work on your instrument.or consult a knowledgeable collection of serial number experts, like the many folks who run the guitar serial number database on the internet, so you can get some of the toughest confirmations for your searches.
