in case you’re wondering why the newer game on average is a few frames slower than the older one, this is to be expected from a 1080p benchmark, as the newer game includes a variety of features that aren’t present in the older game. while some of these features are actually useful in certain cases (as in, the game’s enhanced version of the physics engine that makes things easier to see and interact with), others aren’t and can make the game more difficult to play and/or cause crashes. some of the more notable ones include the reworked ragdoll physics system and the “stair climbing” feature that is specifically designed to eliminate the “stuck in the air” problem found in some other games.

the gtx 780 in particular has some performance problems with advanced physx enabled. to be fair, our test system is not a good representation of most gaming laptops, so i’ll only be presenting the results from the single 780 we tested. the gtx 970, for example, offers a significant performance boost over the gtx 780, and the same is true for other components. unfortunately, in testing we’ve also found that the gtx 780 doesn’t handle advanced physx very well. we did test this ourselves, as it’s supposed to be a pretty stable feature, but in most cases the average frame rate dropped to around 30-35 fps, which is well below what’s acceptable for a 1080p benchmark. the result was the same whether we had physx enabled or disabled on the nvidia control panel. the game is unstable in physx mode and drops in frame rate, as well as having issues with the ragdoll physics engine.

while the gtx 960 is the most powerful card at our disposal today (and its older m60 chip is rather uncommon), there’s no single gpu solution that we can’t find fault with. let’s start with the gtx 660 ti, which we’ve already had a good look at. the first thing that jumps out about metro: last light redux is how much quieter the gtx 660 ti is running compared to the gtx 760, even with the same fan profile. without the fan noise in the background it’s easier to find performance differences, which is somewhat important since both of these cards can get pretty loud, especially when overclocked. as you can see by the charts, we see the gtx 660 ti is only slightly slower than the gtx 760, but we can also spot some notable performance differences in our game.

our next test is the gtx 650 ti boost. while it’s not on the same level of performance as the gtx 660 ti, it’s still slightly faster than the gtx 650 and it can easily hold its own at 1080p. metro: last light redux is a game that can run with low settings, so it doesn’t really need any extra performance, but the gtx 650 ti boost really shines at 2560×1440, where it’s about 30% faster than the gtx 660 ti. it’s also interesting to see that metro: last light redux is more playable at higher settings than metro 2033 redux, which is something i hadn’t expected.
metro: last light redux has been out for quite a while now, and there’s been plenty of time for nvidia to come up with a fix for the physx issues. i can’t say how this has been resolved, but i do know that our tests have not been affected by the problem and we have not seen any noticeable drops in performance. i can’t say for certain that it’s a permanent solution (physx is pretty complex, and the issues seem to be more widespread than just metro: last light redux), but either way it seems to be working well. it’s probably not a permanent solution, though, and it might be a problem that’s only happened to me and my hardware. we’ll keep an eye on it and post more information as we learn more about the problem.
