in one of the episode’s few major surprises, the family isn’t just living a charmed life. we learn that saddam’s wife has been looking for him for years, while his youngest son, uday, is raising his profile in washington, d.c. (and going after saddam’s trusted aide, sabawi ibrahim, in the process). it’s the first time that we know a detail of the family of a dictator.

husseins rise to power was marked by a succession of murder after murder and crackdown after crackdown, often implemented with somewhat questionable efficiency. and then there are the continuous violations of human rights that saddam himself would later perpetrate against iraqs people. the mini realistically portrays this dark narrative by taking viewers inside the prisons in the middle of the night where savage beatings were inflicted upon political prisoners and loyalists alike. the mini also realistically depicts the growth of the oppressive military, which destroyed the lives of many individuals and families at the mere insistence of one man. the mini effectively dramatizes this aspect of husseins rule and thus begins to explore the concept of revenge that gripped so much of his rule. it is a great cinematic device to show the north and its people from the perspective of the terrorist forces that rule in the south.

my criticism of the mini is that it could be more centered. the mini follows many of the false trails of the news miniseries falluja. most of these threads are already well trodden in the previous miniseries, band of brothers. i grew more interested in watching the miniseries as a cohesive story about iraqi history. that said, the mini makes some strong storytelling choices, particularly in depicting scenes from iraqs past. the miniseries also realistically depicts the spread of iraqui terrorism beginning with husseins rise.
