Roblox is a free online game platform designed for kids and teens in which players create their own games and play them within a 3D virtual world. The games can be created using Roblox Studio, a free tool, or an existing game engine like LoxScript, a Lua-based scripting language. In general, players can design and build their own games or play pre-designed games created by other users. For most of Roblox’s history, it was a relatively small game platform that had relatively few commercial games. By the time it was acquired by New York-based online game company Viacom in January 2017, Roblox had created more than ten thousand games in its “Studio” section. Roblox frequently draws positive attention in the media for its games featuring anything from princesses and fairytales, to superheroes, sci-fi, horror, and even a murder mystery game. A number of game companies, including Disney Interactive, have also produced games for the platform.
Roblox was founded by David Baszucki, then a student at the University of Waterloo, and Erik Cassel, then a high school student in Calgary. The two founded Roblox in late 2004 as a project for their final year at Waterloo. Inspired by Build.com, an online game creator in which players build and destroy cities, Baszucki and Cassel decided to make Roblox a “city builder”. However, they envisioned Roblox as a platform similar to the mobile gaming industry, with the idea of having all user-created content contained within a “sandbox” environment. Roblox’s original motto was “Build your own world and play your own games”, where the main objective of the games is to build and maintain a virtual city.
Cassel and Baszucki had originally decided to call the project “Youthful Technology”, and had a website that had been developed for the website. However, Roblox was chosen as the project’s official name in April 2005, and a year later the Roblox Developers Conference was founded. In April 2006, Roblox’s first game, “The Sandbox”, was released for free on the web. The game was made available on platforms such as AOL and Windows Live, and was played on a variety of devices, including computers, mobile phones, and video game consoles.
