For Rizal, the family was a source of inspiration. “I can imagine,” he says, “No mother could be more worthy than the one who has borne me, who has given me the example of a kind of heroic life of self-sacrifice” (Rizal, 1963c: xxi). This obsession with the Church is what prevented Rizal from developing a liberalism worthy of the name (Dunn, 1962: 5). Rizal was never a liberal in the modern sense, but he could have been. If he had been, he would have known that for a Filipino to call for liberty when colonialism was the norm was illusory. As Durkheim later pointed out, the real meaning of liberalism is freedom from coercion, hence from the Church. It is only freedom from coercion from the state or local clergy that liberates the individual and allows him to pursue his own interests. Rizal argues in Desengañamiento de los Bisayas for freedom from the priesthood as a condition for liberation. Freedom, therefore, should not be looked upon as the state of a “self-regulated” society, which is what some people imply. Rather, it is the state of a society in which the individual has been liberated from the control of other people. This is achieved by the state not de facto (per se) but through positive law, for all kinds of coercion, as well as the traditional practices of political and social life, have fallen into oblivion or have been transformed, restrained or replaced by political authority.
