a hvdc system consists of three main subsystems viz. (i) synchronous machine (sm) to convert the ac power into dc power, (ii) converter station (cs) to convert dc into ac and (iii) transmission network to transmit the ac from one place to another. the flow chart of hvdc system model is shown in fig. 2. in this paper, the synchronous machine and the converters are modelled in matlab simscape. in case of converters, it is assumed that the converter is fault-tolerant. the model is simulated for ieee-118 and ieee-300 standards. in the converter station, vsc converter and dc side converter are considered. the control of dc voltage is implemented through pwm method by using a controller. the control system of dc side is based on the current source.

k. r padiyar was a visiting professor at indian institute of technology, gandhinagar, india. he has been a professor/honorary professor at indian institute of science, bangalore (1987-2013). prior to joining iisc, he was with indian institute of technology, kanpur, india (1976-1987). he obtained his m e degree from iisc in 1964 and phd degree from university of waterloo, canada in 1972. he has taught and lectured at several universities in india, canada and usa.he has authored over 200 papers and 8 books including hvdc power transmission systems. his research interests are in the areas of power system dynamics and control, hvdc and facts controllers and their applications in wams and development of self-healing grids. he is the recipient of several awards including prof. rustom choksi award (1999) for excellence in research. he was abb chair professor (2001-2003). he is a fellow of indian national academy of engineering (inae) and the institution of electronics and telecommunication engineers (iete).
located in the converter station, the phase-controlled dc thyristor converter consists of a five-pulse switch converter, a dc chopper, a dc filter for the dc bus, and a dc/ac/dc inverter. a three-phase ac source is connected to the dc/ac/dc inverter to provide alternating current power to an infinite bus. the converter station also has a capacitor bank and the purpose of the capacitor bank is to provide reactive power for the system and reduce the voltage fluctuations across the capacitor bank. the basic design and operation of a dc/ac/dc inverter is explained in [4] and [23] for the current-source and voltage-source types of dc/ac/dc converters, respectively.
