The Centre’s annual fund-raising lt went well. All areas were represented, and perhaps more than one person t:rked for each of the many activities. The seminars. in which the members had engaged were appreciated -by almost everyone. Everything considered, the seminars served the following ends: (a) they got members outside thb Centre to meet some people from the university, O.C.S., and organizations and (b) they indicated to the members that there was a highly qualified and enthusiastic group of people active.on campus who had enough interest to make their union a positive influence in the Centre. The annual seminar. which is. the only major function The Center has at present, served both purposes admirably, and no one can say whether the seminar- partakers would have lapped up their privilege in the absence of these two activities.
In addition to this, the entire variety of activities from which the Centre profits in the annual fund-raising drive was held. lf tiie total income for the Center is about $1500; but the value, to me, of the many hundreds of dollars collected in the dif- ferent aspects of the fund-raising effort are immeas- ues. It is true, of course, that most of the money is sent back to the US National Committee to enable it to subsidize the work of running the State and local chapels, and that it is difficult to convince people to give direct contributions to the Center unless they go into details about the work of the different chapels. However, the value of the Annual Fund is not entirely due to direct contributions, but also to the or- ganizational effort.
To get this fact clear before beginning this chapter on fundraising, it is well to consider briefly the value of the kinds of organiza- tional effort needed. Many of these activities are very short- lived, and it is these which form the great bulk of the Annual Fund receipts.
The first of these is the Annual Fund RA. It is a very real, and important, support of the work of the Centre, being as it is the only major fund-raising effort of the Centre. It provides a lump-sum payment to the Director.
The second is the Executive Board funding of the Seminars, first by way of giving the board a dollar contribution that is not made by the Center, and then as a loan. This money is used to defray the administrative expenses of the Seminars.
