returning to his roots, mochizuki takes us to japan, a country which hasn’t always been at the forefront of japanese cinema. from here we get a glimpse of the dark side of the japanese that is even worse than that in his earlier work.

japanese yakuza films are usually divided into two main groups: the ‘kobayashi-chan’ films and the ‘mishima-chan’ films. the ‘kobayashi-chan’ films are the ‘gangster’ films and are usually centered around yakuza activities. the ‘mishima-chan’ films are the ‘gangster’ films and are usually centered around political or social issues. they are a combination of the two, and are usually centered around the yakuza. this film, however, is a mixture of both. this film is centered around the yakuza, but has a political angle to it. the film revolves around the yakuza in japan in the 80s, and how they react to the rise of the social democratic party in japan in the 80s.

the yakuza have been running and controlling the japanese underworld for a long time. however, in the 80s, the yakuza are facing their greatest challenge. in the 80s, the japanese government introduced an economic program called ‘social democracy’. social democracy allows the japanese to own their own homes, cars and even their own businesses. however, in the eyes of the yakuza, this means that the japanese are letting the yakuza take over their nation. this is a great threat to the yakuza, so they decide to fight against the social democracy.

this is a film that deals with the ‘death penalty’ in japan. the japanese death penalty law is that in order to be executed, the death penalty needs to be carried out within a certain amount of time. if not, the person is returned to prison. so far, the japanese have carried out 28 people who have been sentenced to death.

the film starts with a woman (saki kurata) in a red-and-black tuxedo unveiling a statue of the departed emperor. it’s an empty, joyless ceremony. the woman is the daughter of a family that has been forsaking their own japanese traditions and has become an international success. the woman’s brother is also seen in the beginning and is singing the “asian song.” (the soundtrack is available on our soundtrack page.) the brother, whom she has met in china and russia, dies in a plane crash.
the film takes place in japan in the present, with a novelist who is also a novelist writing about his 20-year-old self. he is terrified of becoming like his father. he is also having an affair with a married woman. one of his novels is based on a sexual encounter that he had with a journalist.
the novelist comes home and finds his brother dying in his room. the novelist goes out and discovers his brother’s room has been arranged in the style of a japanese hotel, complete with a plum tree, a maid, and a gigantic reception desk. the novelist’s brother has hired a bunch of musicians and they are playing “the asian song” for him.
he is sitting in a room with the dead brother’s wife. she is beautiful but unhappy. the novelist knows he must be happy, but he is not. he wants to make his wife happy. they are in a wedding dress. they were supposed to meet a man, a japanese man. he has disappeared. the novelist has a friend from university who is a famous novelist. he has a very strange thing happen. this friend must write a novel in a day. he shows up, but he is drunk. the novelist has to decide whether to kill his friend. he does kill his friend. he takes care of his friend’s corpse.
