Showing the lives and emotions of four stories running in parallel, Jahnu Barua’s first feature film ‘Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara’ is touching, often grotesque, but never predictable. It is a story about love, faith, madness and regret, starring Kher as an inspiring retired Hindi professor who begins to believe that he is responsible for Mahatma Gandhi’s death. Urmila Matondkar is a beautiful and magnetic young woman whose husband was killed. Advised by her mother (Anusmriti Sarkar) to reconcile with her husband, she agrees on the condition that her husband must be declared officially dead. A struggle ensues between her and her in-laws, and her mother in law, played by Rajit Kapur, joins her side. The husband, played by Pravin Dabas, in his turn, agrees to the conditions. How the crisis is handled is the crux of the story. The performances of Urmila, Kher and Dabas are stellar. ‘Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara’ is one of the most original films I have seen in a long time. It is not a simple drama but a philosophical one.

In fact, I think it did not do as well as it was anticipated to at the box office. Raj Kapoor’s last film was way back in 2010, and it seems his fans are hesitant to give his new venture another chance. It’s not a Bollywood film, but the Hindi film ‘Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara’, which is distributed by PVR Pictures, is a tribute to Rajkumar Shwetamber’s 1966 anti-caste movie with the same title, which he directed as well. Kher plays a retired professor who starts believing that he is responsible for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. It’s a smartly written story that is fun to watch as well. It’s also a beautifully made film that also makes a strong, albeit complicated, statement about human rights, nationalism and civil rights.

This isn’t to say that most of the film’s glamour- and glitzy- yet-unpleasant moments could be extrapolated to Bollywood (the producers) as Bollywood is generally comfortable with the fact that it appeals to different audiences. Manish Jha’s script is nothing like ‘Bol Bachchan Ho (The Imposter)’, ’60 Minutes’, ‘Kya Mujhe Achchi Pakistan (Amarda)’, ‘Dum Maaro Dum’ or ‘Jism 2’, but it is a movie that aims at a different audience, and that’s what makes it important. If you haven’t watched Jahnu Barua’s debut film, ‘Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara’, stay away from it. It’s a dark and disturbing film about love, nationalism and its consequences in a beleaguered nation.
Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara’, and no disrespect to Jahnu Barua, was a movie that fascinated me, because it was a film that pulled no punches and I did not know how it could possibly work out in the end.
The movie is a good attempt at depicting the aftermath of one of the most heinous acts against democracy to ever happen in the history of modern India. The film highlights the politicised nature of the justice system of India, specifically the treatment meted out to those who are loyal to Gandhi. It won’t be wrong to say that Justice Verma, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, is the central hero in the film.
Mr. Darashish Mistry is well known by his biographical film that was made on The Assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. This movie is directed by two veteran who are Darashish Mistry and Ketan Mehta. The movie is starring Manoj Bajpayee as Mahatma Gandhi and Arif Zakaria as Godse. They are pair of acting, telling the story of a man who kills himself in a bid to meet a non-violent Indian nationalist and his widow, who was also an apostle of non-violence.
