Queen Vaidehi’s joy and happiness is a bit different from the joy and happiness of the devotees of the Lotus Sutra. This joy and happiness of hers, unlike the joy and happiness of the devotees in the Lotus Sutra, is also reminiscent of Vaidehi Chaudhari’s joy and happiness as the heroine of The Ramayana during her lifetime. But the Ramayana and the Lotus Sutra are stories, while the life and teaching of Bhuddhism are real. And in the Lotus Sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha taught a different ideal than the direct teaching of Bhuddhism. In fact, Queen Vaidehi’s situation is quite similar to the situation of Rama. Shakyamuni Buddha said that Rama was a hero.

The bond maid who bore the most powerful children was a slave at the palace of King Janaka, before Rama and Lakshmana were born. So even though King Janaka himself was the most powerful man among them, Rama was more powerful. When Rama was banished to the forest, Princess Sita expressed her doubt that King Janaka would have chosen the right man for his daughter if he knew Rama would be so lacking in courage. Today, Queen Vaidehi also expresses her doubt that her father, the King of Videha, would have got Her married to Rama if he knew Rama would be so lacking in courage.

Queen Vaihedis third request was made after Shakyamuni Buddha projected images of the pure lands for her, including the Land of Bliss. She said to the Buddha: I am now delighted to be born in Amitabha Buddhas Land of Bliss. I beseech you to teach me how to perceive (prior to contemplation) [that land] and to teach me how to attain samapatti/samadhi. This is a special request made by Queen Vaidehi for her personal practice, for the purpose of attaining rebirth in the Land of Bliss.

The Buddha acknowledged that this request by the Queen was reasonable, “Hard to see on one’s own if one does not know that which to look at.” However, he offered only a glimpse of what the Buddha could teach in what is called Parinibbana — the breakthrough of the truth of “no-self”, the end of suffering. The Buddha taught that the Triple Gem (Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha) are the entire path and that only the Buddha is omniscient. He also taught that only when the Buddha explains how the Triple Gem works can someone truly understand the profound teachings. The Triple Gem is an ancient doctrine that is still deeply held by the Buddha’s followers today. When Queen Vaidehi asked the Buddha about the place of pure karma, the Buddha enlightened her by pointing out that it has always been so. This is why he could teach about it without effort or straining: when one realizes that no-self, the Four Noble Truths are fully and immediately present to them. It is just like the sun which shines upon the earth so long as the clouds are above the earth. The sun, the earth, and the clouds are no different, yet one can never see all three at once. In the same way, no-self can be realized as well as realized by all the Buddhas. It is through non-self (no-self) that all the Buddhas appear as self and are present to all beings. This is the true state of the triple gem. For example, the Buddha does not say, “The Triple Gem is such-and-such.” Rather, he says, “The Triple Gem is so-and-so.” Everyone can clearly see the so-and-so without a struggle. It is just this way, without effort or straining.
