background. medically unexplained symptoms are common, and are reported in up to 50% of general practices. general practitioners often do not have the skills to deal with such patients. the patient-generated index of medically unexplained symptoms (pgi-mus) is a brief, self-completed questionnaire designed to help in the recognition and management of these patients. we have translated the questionnaire into arabic, and tested its test-retest reliability and criterion-related validity. methods. we recruited 100 patients from a primary care centre. patients completed the pgi-mus twice, with a 2-week interval between tests. they completed the questionnaire on the first day, and a postal questionnaire was sent two weeks later. results. of the 80 patients who completed the study, the mean age was 47 years, and 61% were female. the pgi-mus had an internal consistency of 0.95, and a spearman’s rho coefficient of 0.96 (p<0.001) when used to assess the criterion-related validity of the arabic version. the mean of the pgi-mus was significantly lower in the group who responded to the follow-up questionnaire (p<0.001). the pgi-mus may be a useful instrument in identifying patients with medically unexplained symptoms.

The objective of this study was to develop a pediatric measure of chronic nausea severity, the Nausea Severity Scale (NSS), and evaluate its reliability and validity in youth with abdominal pain-related functional gastrointestinal disorders (AP-FGID). Pediatric patients (aged 1117 years-old, n = 236) presenting to an outpatient clinic for evaluation of abdominal pain completed the NSS, Children’s Somatization Inventory (CSI), Functional Disability Inventory (FDI), Abdominal Pain Index (API), Patient-Report Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS), Anxiety and Depression Scales and the Pediatric Rome III Questionnaire for FGIDs. The NSS demonstrated good concurrent, discriminant, and construct validity, as well as good internal consistency. One-third (34%) of AP-FGID patients reported experiencing nausea most or every day in the previous two weeks. The severity of nausea was higher in females than males and correlated significantly with the severity of somatic symptoms, functional disability, anxiety, and depression. The NSS is a valid and reliable measure of nausea in children with AP-FGID.
