Efficient generations of tunable photon pairs from a double quantum dot.
The photonic implementation of quantum dots holds promise for developing practical quantum communication networks, quantum key distribution systems, and quantum optoelectronics. Rather than using single quantum dots as the source of photon pairs, we propose an alternative scheme in which photons are generated from multiple quantum dots. In this work, we demonstrate the generation of a flexible source of narrowband photon pairs with tunable frequency and polarization. Our system is composed of a nearby coupled double quantum dot inside a semiconductor heterostructure. The optical emission from one of the quantum dots is coupled into a grating coupler in a semiconductor optical microcavity, forming a double-sided microcavity with coupling to a waveguide. A transition from quantum dot to microcavity is realized for selecting with greater efficiency a quantum dot that, when optical pumping, emits photons in a desired frequency and polarization. The entire system is electrically driven with a modulation frequency of 80 MHz and a peak density of 6 x 10(12) cm(-2). The emission intensity of a two-photon emission resonance is roughly proportional to the power of the driving source. We demonstrate that by driving away from the two-photon resonance, and hence reducing the pumping power, we generate strongly antibunched photon pairs with a Fano factor as small as 1-2.
