only on occasion does mohanlal show that he knows exactly what he is doing in the film. he is splendid in a scene with a schoolgirl who has been sent to plead with his ex-employer for a job. she has no idea where the bureaucracy is and says as much in the moments before the scene’s denouement. the scene is so relaxed and natural that it takes you by surprise. in a sequence where he is being briefed on the rules of a game, the four elements of which he is to master, he is at ease with himself. this is the same man who can walk into a hospital with no sense of what is going on there, but apart from all this, it is his immense talent that helps to look after this film. the film is as authentic as it can be but his character is only remotely fictional.

the film has many elements and this leads to a great deal of repetition. kalabharathinte pusthakam keeps repeating a joke that mohanlal has acted brilliantly in another film to imply that it is his talent that has made this film succeed. the entire film is presented as a failed dream from which he is now waking up and he has to face the consequences of what he had done. mohanlal’s character is a lot of fun to be around, he has a perfectly piquant sense of humour and he is at his peak with his well-defined features. the character could easily be made better. there is a very minor role for mohanlal, though it’s hard to tell what it means in the context of the film. the actor’s character could have been fleshed out a bit to make it have more meaning.

the plot is pretty much a no-brainer of the same-old-same-old. it takes in all the odds and ends that you could expect to be included and it ends up being a routineised retelling of its own plot. in a typical malayalam film, that means most of the stylised visual procedures are used so much that you are tired before you have even started. unnai kodu thambi for instance, is referred to here in nearly every scene and in the second half, you find everything has suddenly been made to look as if the director is trying to use the best technology he can lay his hands on. the film’s value lies in the fact that it can be watched with a perfectly straight face and enjoyed for that.

The campaign also recognised the Indian reality competition, ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’Ki’ with the judges, Pia Kalra and Achintya Acharya. The young people then created mash-ups of the Mamta Mohandas picturised on the set and the Malayalam remake of the original Bollywood track ‘Zara Sa Kehna Hai’.
