In the coming days, I will finish up for now my gameshow on the coronavirus. I hope you will all forgive me for disrupting your routines for a while longer. I will be continuing to investigate the administrations response to the outbreak in the coming days, weeks, months and years. Stay tuned for more updates. May you all recover from this pandemic safely and may your next adventure be full of games, growth and more importantly, gratitude. One of us should live to pick up the controller.

There are now a limited number of COVID-19 vaccine options at our disposal. I am fortunate to have a strong immune system and have been fortunate to have missed both the T cells and the body’s ability to recognize and kill viruses. I am breathing and smiling for the most part, but my biggest challenge will be the mental picture I will carry with me of what it was like to watch my family and friends slowly lose their long term memories of what it was like to live and eat, the beautiful, complicated relationships it took to do so. The web of our history is far too precious to lose to something so small and equally precious as a virus.

Nate was an incredible, kind-hearted person and we miss him dearly. His loss will be felt deeply across the campus community. Many of us watched him struggle and fight for his life, watching him succumb to the virus that had entered his body. We are thankful for his life and his struggles and that he had the opportunity to experience so much love.

The rise of the political right has become a given, the president a monster, the liberal media weak and ineffective. Young Brandi embodies this more than anyone Ive known. As I watched a video she posted on her Facebook page of her shouting at the Senate during the State of the Union address last year, I realized that theres no better political statement than when a rapper, particularly a black rapper, gets enraged. Brandi is unashamed of her outrage, she covers her tattoos, her name, and the symbols of her pride in her music. Its a complete change in comparison to the usual staccato delivery and stifled voices of battle rappers. On her first full length album, Woman, Brandi uses her voice to expose the bigotry of many of our elected officials and give them a taste of the same treatment.
In the early 2000s, the Flying Lizards produced some of the most compelling fusion music of its time. Blending the spindly, bright-edged electronic ambience of Minneapolis-based trio Slint with the jangly guitar pop of the Garage Days-era Pixies, the group released a series of typically eclectic full-lengths that left an indelible mark on indie rock history. The final Lizards album, 2004s The Eternal, still sounds as fresh and vibrant today as it did when the group disbanded in 2006. Thats thanks to a set of warm, euphoric singles that coupled the bands knack for crafting impeccable pop with striking songs that couldnt be contained on any other album. Bob Boilen is a friend and an excellent music writer who hails from the Pacific Northwest but now lives in Portland, Ore. He contributed to our Magazine and Fader blog entries back in 2013 and had the good fortune of attending Flying Lizards shows throughout that time. He tells a story in our interview with Gina Warth that ill never forget. We asked Bob some questions, and he answered us in his own words. -Kitty
