No one ever took us to task, so we were happy to deliver more updates in a much simpler and a more convenient manner. However just recently we had to update the license that is used for our tool, because one got introduced to SimMarket and although it is not the primary reason, it is the result of something that went wrong and should have been dealt with. As such, we had to update the license as well. **and because we had to update the license to stop the free updates, because a free license for the tool doesn’t make sense, while the license itself is the *only* thing that matters. No purchase is required for it. (See our other post that explains this.) Furthermore a client cannot have a free tool once we want to keep the free updates on the tool, so it is like having 20 years of free updates… But this is all again more about SimMarket (as to why we had to update the license) which is on its own completely invalid and makes no sense at all. Which is why we have to keep our tools updated, as it is the only way to stay compatible. There is another tool, which does not come with it for free by the way, which we don’t sell anymore as the client ran out of time to finish it (it was FST-3D) but otherwise is just a demo version. Our whole reason for keeping FST-3D alive for years was that we knew that in the future a tool will come with the license (we have neither cancelled nor sold the license and would keep the license valid) and we had to be sure not to let our tool get obsolete by accident, so we had to keep our tool updated. The free version is only a demo because we want to give our clients the chance to try it out and to have a complete overview of what we have done in the past. It is useful in case of issues, because it helps you download our legacy *.fsdtool files to see the differences in newer versions. It is absolutely no real or legal way to use it as a standalone or to fill a hole in a product (which is also a bad thing) but it is certainly legal as a demo or to check compatibility. Indeed Simmarket did license our tool to use it to determine license compatibility and test it. But we are not supposed to get a free license for it, we are supposed to get a license for free updates. We did NOT get a free license for our tool for free updates, we got a free license for the tool, because the update to the license was free, thus it still makes a lot of sense. But even if the license update was not free, we would still get a free license update, because the free license is valid only for updates.We have not heard anything from Simmarket and have not got any answer to our question if they do plan to change the way their software is delivered, because they don’t realize they are doing it wrong.
